Updated Australian Toyota Avalon GXi 20042005
In 1999, Toyota has sold the old tooling for the Toyota Avalon in Australia, which launched the Avalon as a "brand new" model in June 2000. The Australian Avalon therefore had an identical body to the original 1995 Avalon. The Australian model was built in the Melbourne suburb of Altona done in both RHD (for Australia, New Zealand and parts of Asia) and left-hand drive for the Middle East. The Camry was also made at this plant. Avalon performed poorly in Australia; critics called the car "boring", and sales was lukewarm. Avalon is front-wheel drive and available only as a sedan with a 3.0-liter V6 and automatic transmission. However, his rivals for, The Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore, has offered a wide range of body styles and options of engine / transmission.
Many buyers preferred the Camry V6 instead of the Avalon Peninsula, and the facelift for 2004 did not address the lower than expected sales, with many criticizing the new style front. Because of these concerns in sales, Toyota Australia, she has sold to fleets of taxis, against the Ford Falcon, with a specially designed for dual fuel (LPG and petrol) compatible machines. Avalon production ceased in mid-2005. In November 2006, Toyota introduced its replacement, Toyota Aurion.
